Undergoing a total knee or hip replacement is a fantastic step towards a pain-free life. However, the surgery itself is only the beginning of your journey. A structured, evidence-based rehabilitation programme is vital for a successful outcome. At Gray Physiotherapists in Constantia, we are here to guide you seamlessly through every single stage of your knee or hip replacement recovery.

The Power of Prehab:

Rehabilitation starts before you reach the operating theatre. We call this ‘prehab’. Engaging in physiotherapy before your surgery physically prepares your body for the stress of the operation. Consequently, strong evidence shows that strengthening your lower limbs and improving your joint mobility beforehand leads to a significantly faster post-operative recovery.

In-Hospital Care – The Day of Surgery:

After your surgery, we waste no time. We usually see you on the very same day of your operation. Our primary goal is early mobilising. Research consistently proves that getting moving immediately reduces the risk of blood clots, decreases joint stiffness, and ultimately improves your long-term joint function.

Preparing for Discharge:

Most of our patients are ready for discharge just one to two days post-op. Therefore, before you leave the hospital, we ensure you are moving safely and independently. Specifically, we make sure you can confidently navigate stairs, if applicable to your home environment. Above all, we want you to leave the ward mobilising at your highest possible functional level.

Seamless Continuity of Care and Surgeon Collaboration:

Leaving the hospital can sometimes feel slightly daunting. However, our outpatient practice is conveniently attached directly to the hospital. Because most of our hospital patients follow up with us in our rooms, you benefit from continuity of care. Furthermore, we work very closely and communicate continuously with orthopaedic surgeons to ensure seamless continuity of care. We communicate with them regarding your progress to ensure your rehabilitation is always safely aligned with their specific surgical protocols. You will continue to work with a team who already knows your knee intimately and understands your unique journey.

Outpatient Rehabilitation – Rebuilding Your Strength:

Your outpatient follow-up sessions will typically begin around two weeks post-op. From there, we see you weekly until you are about six weeks post-op. Of course, this timeline extends if you have specific, higher-level athletic or personal goals that require further conditioning.

Utilising Our Spacious Gym Area:

During your outpatient sessions, we focus heavily on restoring your full range of motion and rebuilding your muscle strength. Furthermore, our spacious outpatient gym area is fully equipped to support your recovery. We regularly utilise our stationary bike to improve your joint range and mobility. In addition, our leg press provides a fantastic, safe way to steadily rebuild your leg strength without overloading the healing joint.
